Robert Hemphill is CEO of AES Solar Power Ltd, a $1 billion joint venture of the AES Corporation and Riverstone LLC, an affiliate of the Carlyle Group. The company, formed in March 2008, is a leading developer, owner and operator of utility-scale photovoltaic solar plants that will be connected to the electric power grid. These installations, ranging in size from less than 2 MW to more than 50 MW, consist of large arrays of land-based solar photovoltaic panels that directly convert sunlight to electricity. The company currently has forty five plants in operation or construction (247 MW) and a growing pipeline of projects in southern Europe, Asia and the US.

Mr. Hemphill was previously employed at AES, a global electric power generating and distribution company. AES owns and operates 44,000 MW of power plants in 29 countries around the globe, and is publicly listed on the NYSE As Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff to CEO Paul Hanrahan, he oversaw AES internal processes relating to new capital investments, financings, personnel management and public affairs activities, with a special responsibility for new technology initiatives. He joined the company at its inception in 1981, and managed the development of many of the Company's earliest US projects. He led the Company's business expansion into Asia, with a particular focus on developing AES's businesses in China. Prior to joining AES, he was Deputy Manager of Power in the Tennessee Valley Authority, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the US Department of Energy, and a senior management analyst in the Office of Management and Budget

Mr. Hemphill graduated Magna Cum Laude from Yale University and earned an MA from UCLA and an MBA from George Washington University. He served as an airborne infantry officer in the US Army in Vietnam, and in the Special Forces. His interests include gardening, cooking, tribal art and basketball.
